Hey there, sunshine. Welcome to the Power On Plants podcast. We're your host, jared and Anita Roussell, and we're absolutely head over heels for whole plant foods and helping you navigate this incredible plant based journey. That's because our lives have been completely changed by plant based goodness. We used to struggle every day with excess pounds and low energy, vascular disease, joint pain and lack of sleep, just to name a few, and even though we're medical professionals, we still weren't getting practical answers that actually worked. So we dug into the research, we started living what we learned, and now we both have our lives back, and that's what we want for you, too. The truth is, you can do this, and it's not hard. You just need a way that will bring real and lasting change, and that path. It has to be simple and enjoyable, and it's got to be delicious too. So are you ready to live your life to the fullest? Then you're in the right place, because living without limits that's what Power On Plants is all about. So pull up your chair, grab a matcha latte and let's get started. Sister, have you also fallen prey for the bait and switch? You know the front of the package, bait and switch. Take, for example, when I was in the store, walking down the aisle just minding my own business, and there was the avocado oil mayonnaise. That's back when I thought avocado oil was healthy and we were still eating all.
Speaker 2:So I thought mayo was also healthy and good for you, or at least maybe not as bad as it actually is.
Speaker 1:But you know, I think this is one of the first times. It's kind of the origin of my looking at the ingredients labels and just shaking my head, no, and going why, why, how many times have you heard me do that in the store? I know we mentioned it a couple of times, but y'all it is real. This is real life.
Speaker 2:And when it happens, it's completely unexpected because I'm minding my own business. I'm shopping with my wife at Whole Foods or wherever, and I hear why, why do they do this? She found an ingredient list violation.
Speaker 1:I know he's wishing about that time he was on one of those electric grocery carts so he could peel out and just get away from it all.
Speaker 2:Not at all. No, I agree with you a hundred percent.
Speaker 1:It's ridiculous.
Speaker 2:I'm just kind of walking along and she'll find a product and look at it or maybe something that we need, and she's looking at maybe some of the other alternatives, because we check from time to time just to make sure stuff isn't added.
Speaker 1:Look, I can't ever tell this story, though, without thinking about my kindred spirit that we ran into when we lived in Naukati. It was Pona Vigior Beach when we used to live there in between Jackson and St Augustine in Florida.
Speaker 2:Okay, so we're walking in the Greenwise store there yes, Publix Market Greenwise yes.
Speaker 1:Okay, that store was sweet. By the way, if you have a Greenwise, do yourself a favor and just go and shop there. We don't have one anymore.
Speaker 2:We loved it.
Speaker 1:We loved it so much. Okay, so we go into Greenwise and we're walking around and we walk past this aisle and, I kid you, not a man's voice going why. Why do they do this? I'm going to tell you what Ollie said. He was not happy. Come to find out. We stopped and talked to him and his wife and he has just gone plant-based.
Speaker 2:I think about only a month before that point.
Speaker 1:Same experience. Why do they put all this crap in here? I don't understand, and it's so true, it just doesn't have to be. This is what's gotten us to thinking about starting some products I mean, we've talked about that so many times food products, because we just get so frustrated and there's so many things that are not there that we personally want and wish we could have. But there are some great options. Okay, so your favorites, like if you're looking for salsa and you're looking for marinara and you've got to know how to switch those things out, we can help you out. And that gives me back to the mayonnaise. Now, I'm not going to suggest you buy mayo in the store, because even the vegana is not healthy. It has a lot of oil in it. There are other things you can eat, like cashew cream. Literally takes me less than a minute to throw together a batch of cashew cream last night. Seriously, that's how long it takes. It's cashews, water, a little garlic, because I always put garlic in it, unless, for some reason, I don't. But I just very rarely, like I always put garlic. Okay, you don't have to, but it's cashews water. I'm just telling you how simple it is. If you want a little pinch of me so or something to season something up, you could do that. You totally leave that out. It's got to have vinegar. So your three basic ingredients to the water cashew vinegar. You can put lemon juice if you wanted to taste like mayo. You can put a little pinch of black salt if you wanted to taste like egg. There are ways to make it taste like mayo. Again, less than one minute. I want you to keep that in mind. That's the big takeaway here. It's not I need a recipe for cashew cream. No, it's not. No, it's not, sister, because you can get that. That's not hard. What's hard is getting your mindset shift to say to yourself it's not hard. But back to the Bain and Switch again. Okay. So I'm walking down the aisle and I see avocado or mayonnaise and I was thinking, oh, this is so exciting. You know, I can have avocado or mayonnaise. Turn it over expecting to see the only oil in this mayo is avocado oil, because that's what they told me.
Speaker 2:That's all it said on the front of the package.
Speaker 1:Yeah didn't tell me anything else. It just told me that, well, it might have told me a couple of things, it didn't have in it, okay, but it didn't tell me what it did, and that's the whole point of this episode. Open that, pepe over and on there soybean oil. I mean nine times out of 10, that's what you're going to find.
Speaker 2:That's a predominant one, yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, or palm oil, or canola oil, or any number of oils you're going to find on there. So again, I'm not telling you the story to tell you that mayo is healthy. I'm telling you the story to let you know. Do not be fooled by the front of the package, because they're going to tell you. The only thing they want you to know is what you're going to think is healthy, which is the avocado oil, only to find out that, even if it was a really healthy thing, they're not telling you all the other stuff that's in there. Oh, raisins, these raisins are healthy. These raisins have no cholesterol? Of course they don't. They're plant-based products.
Speaker 2:They're products, exactly.
Speaker 1:They don't have. They're gluten-free.
Speaker 2:Yeah, gluten-free raisins.
Speaker 1:But they have no gluten by nature, so this is the thing we're talking about. You turn it over, though, and what do you see in there? Oil. Why do my raisins have oil in them? Okay, read that ingredients label, sister. Do not get duped by the front of the package Organic raisins. Read the back of it. Do not buy dried fruit that has oil in it. Oil has 120 calories per tablespoon, so you've got to go back and listen to the episode about calorie density, where we talk about that episode number 228. We're going to tell you about oils and share, about why you need to know and why you need to care All right, especially when it comes to weight in calories, but the main point here is I don't want you freaking out Jared doesn't want you freaking out so much about the grams of this and that on the nutrition facts, but we especially don't want you getting duped by what's on the front of the package. You bring it home Simply potatoes is in my cart, and I get home and whoa, this isn't just simply potatoes. You look at the ingredients label on that. You're not going to believe what all is in those simply potatoes, even just by the name itself. Not even what they tell you is not on there to get you de-septive, it is de-septive, it's advertising, it's all there to get you to buy that product.
Speaker 2:It's marketing. There are two main things that I find for these products. One that gets you distracted by this one nutrient that's in it. So this is a great source of calcium, but they never tell you about the other things, like with dairy. Hey, it's a great source of calcium. Don't mind the saturated fats, the hormones that are just naturally present, even if it's no hormone added. There's naturally hormones in milk and a lot of it. But we don't think about that or the casein or these other things that are in there, the addictive protein that's in it.
Speaker 1:So it's just To bring the calf back to the cow. We've got to think about that for a minute. That's why casein is there and the manufacturers are pulling it out and adding it to products no Like. There's a reason for it. If they're doing that, there's a reason for it. It's to bring you back over and over again because they know it's addictive and it is not a health product. It's not something you want in your feed.
Speaker 2:So we've got this one ingredient. Hey, this is a great source of this. We want you to ignore the fact that it has this other stuff.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:Or hey, this product has it has no cholesterol in it. Well, of course it doesn't. It's plant-based, it's not an animal-based product, so it doesn't have cholesterol, never mind. It may have saturated fats, maybe from coconut oil or palm oil, or it's highly processed, so there's a lot of sugar refined stuff in it. So it's not a health food. And so they're plain bait and switch. They're getting you focused on one aspect.
Speaker 1:Whatever it doesn't have or the one ingredient it does right.
Speaker 2:Like trans fats, which are terrible for you. It just you got to be aware. Mm-hmm because they play on that. People are wanting to avoid gluten, or you need to avoid cholesterol, so they're going to highlight that one thing, because I know you're looking for it, right? Are they lying? No, they're not lying. They're just not giving you the whole truth, whole truth, right? So you think I'll label on back.
Speaker 1:Well, this is gluten-free, but what you got to ask yourself is but is it healthy? Right, what else is in there? Are these whole plant foods or minimally processed foods that are going to fuel my body? Well, look at the back of it now. No, you're thinking. It's hard, though. If you're gluten-free, it's just hard to find products. It's more challenging, but there are a lot of gluten-free products out there now, and Most every recipe, if not every recipe in our cookbook is gluten-free. I know the carrot cake gyms are not, but if you buy it and you're like I'm gluten-free 100% and I need it, just send it to me. I think I'm actually going to just end up adding that to the cookbook, because so many of our clients want to eat gluten-free For one reason or another. It's not that they all have celiac or anything like that. It's just I feel I feel better without it. I don't get bloated as much without it. So, sister, what is your takeaway today? Do not get duped by the bait and switch. You're not going to get tricked by that anymore. There are marketers who are paid really good money to get you to buy that product, but you, because you're a savvy member of the power and plants family are not going to get duped by the front of their package, by their marketing point. You're gonna know to turn that package over. I don't care what they say it's free of or what it has on the front, and you're gonna look at what's actually in there. And this is gonna save you time too, because you're not gonna be worried about and reading everything on the front. If you go straight to the ingredients, you don't have to wonder I wonder what is in there, I wonder what's not in there and try to figure it out. They tell you right there on the package, right where it says ingredients it's usually on the back. Just look at it and start reading the words. If you can't pronounce them, if there's so many and it's just such a long list that you don't even know what in the world they're talking about, it's time to find the next.
Speaker 2:And in the process of doing this, you're finding your new favorites, your new favorite, and so these will be your go-tos now. Would you recommend periodically take a look, because sometimes Formulations and ingredients may change. But as a whole you have your favorites, you have your go-tos and then the next time you go to the store you know exactly which one to reach for.
Speaker 1:Where are you on your plant-based journey?
