We love having you join us and we spend a lot of time on this podcast, in case you haven't noticed, answering the questions that you ask us most. Today we're talking about how do you boost your immunity. This question just came up to us again this week because we're in the throes of cold and flu season. Of course, you always want to know how to have a strong immune system. It just makes sense because that helps you fight off diseases. So you want to look at ways you can do that all throughout the year, but this time of the year cold and flu season you definitely want to know what's going to pack an extra punch, and that's what we're sharing with you today. Hey sister, welcome to the Power On Plants podcast. Are you tired of staring into the fridge wondering what to eat so you can just feel better? Do you want to avoid spending hours in the kitchen making complicated meals in the name of health? Would you love to leave fatigue behind and finally have the energy to do all the things you want to do? Hi, we're shared in an eatery cell Christ followers, healthcare professionals, parents of four and big fans of great tasting food. We, too, tried exercising more, eating natural and clean foods, but we still found ourselves struggling with what we thought were changes that come with age or bad genes, and we weren't finding answers to traditional routes. So we dug into the research and created our secret nutritional weapon sustainable plant-based living. The truth is, you can eat more whole plant foods and it's not hard. You just need the way that's realistic and delicious so you never feel deprived. If you're ready to enjoy your meals, no longer be held back by your health struggles and actively live your life, then you're in the right place. So grab your favorite plant-based cup of happy pop in those earbuds and let's get started. How are things going for you this week? Listen, we have been so busy around here. We just had the opening of Power on Plant Society. You know that's our group coaching program and community where we work with you step by step to get results, but it only opens a couple of times a year and this opening was extremely exciting. I am thrilled about all the new members that have joined us and the results they're already getting. The big key here is, all of them were already podcast listeners, just like you and you know what they did. Before they came into the group coaching program, they had already started implementing what they learned here, taking one step in the next. But then they reached a point and they thought you know, you've given us all this information and I want to know what steps to take next. And so now we're taking them by the hand and getting them results. They're already losing weight, they're already getting decreased inflammation and all these things, but we want you to start that process here. That's why we keep showing up for you, week after week, to give you these steps, because you don't need to wait till the door's open, jared, and I want you to start getting life change today. And this is how you do it by taking one step at a time, implementing what we teach you here week after week. And so today we're talking about how do you boost your immunity so you can fight off colds and flu and other diseases as well. You know this just doesn't apply to cold and flu season. Maybe you're listening and you're thinking it's not cold and flu season right now. Doesn't matter, keep playing, because the things we're sharing today affect your general immunity and will help you to do better, no matter what season of the year it is.
Speaker 2:Well, plus, how many times have you heard I have a summer cold, right, and these things happen anytime of year, but actually the reason why it's so prevalent in the fall I heard a pathologist say that we don't really have a cold and flu season. We have a vitamin D deficiency season. Isn't that interesting, and so as we go into the shorter days and all that, the cooler months, that we get less sun exposure, and so then our immunity goes down, and so we need to know how to boost it. We need to know how to boost it.
Speaker 1:And so now you know I'm going to put Jared on the spot, if you've been around here any length of time at all.
Speaker 2:And this was totally in the show notes that she was going to do this.
Speaker 1:No, no, it's not in the notes at all, but I just was sitting here thinking I just want to pick his brain for a minute, because you'll know, we get those gold nuggets when we start picking Jared's brain. Mining for nuggets, mining for the nuggets, all right. So, jared, what would you say is the number one key? He doesn't know what I've written down in my outline notes today, but what would you say is that's how I keep him on his toes. So what would you say is the number one key for keeping your immunity strong throughout the entire year?
Speaker 2:It just has to straight up be eating a whole food plant-based diet day in and day out. Could not have said it better, myself Eating a great variety of food, eating from the five power food groups and then just doing it day after day. That will give you the best immunity possible.
Speaker 1:Absolutely 100%. That is the first key on my list of steps we're going to give you today. It's eat a whole food, plant-based diet. I didn't talk to Jared about that, but we just know from the nutritional research we dug into how we got results and how we keep getting others results too, those same results. We could say, hey, we're the weight loss people, or the blood pressure people, or the cholesterol people or the autoimmune people and all those would apply, all those would be true, but instead we say we're the people who show you how to make plant-based eating sustainable so that you can finally feel better. Why do we say that? Is it true that these food that God has put on this planet for you to live optimally See Genesis 1.29 for proof. These are the things you were wired by your creator to eat and thrive on. The closer we can get back to the garden, the better. We talked about this before in other episodes, but y'all know, stop and think about that as a believer in your life. Think about when you've gotten back to how he said to do things and you can get back to the garden, walking and talking with him daily throughout the day, spending time at his feet, working hard, like what are all those things? You know? Some people don't think there was work in the garden. We were created to work. You have a purpose, you have a plan in this world. How can you fulfill it if your body isn't fueled? Well, why did God include instructions on how our bodies were to eat? He made it very simple. It's one sentence, it's one verse. It's right there. It is so clear, it's so easy, but we make it complicated. And then what further complicates it is all these hijacking things that have been put into our society, into your life, intentionally by your enemy. You know you have an enemy. He's out there. He does not want you to thrive, he does not want you to reach your purpose, he does not want you to feel good. Well, when you're not getting the things you were created to eat and those things have been replaced by the things that sabotage your health, artificial things, even quote cleaner foods that have the things hiding in them that we teach you how to discover on the ingredients label, all those things are not set up for your success. But when you can get back to the garden and, like Jared said, you start eating the whole plant foods, these are the things that cause you to thrive. Do you know? We've heard time and again from multiple sources there are tens of thousands of things found in plants that they haven't even named yet. These are just the things they've identified that don't have a name. And we're walking around worrying about where do you get your protein when all plant foods have protein in them? You know all these things that we've been taught to fear and worry about and it's a high jacked our health.
Speaker 2:I mean, I always go back to where does your protein get its protein? Because eventually the source is going to be plants. Cows don't eat other animals, they eat plants. You know, fish may eat other fish, but eventually fish are going to eat the little fish that are going to get back to the algae and the kelp and the other sea plants. So it all originates back to plants.
Speaker 1:So what we find is when you get back to that original source, the one that we were created to thrive on, that is when our bodies do well, and that's why Jared and I are both saying standing on the mountaintop shouting is one of our members recently said. She said I just wish I could stand on the mountaintop and shout to all my family members eat this way, live this way. It's enjoyable, it's delicious, but it makes me feel amazing.
Speaker 2:Well, that's why we do this podcast. This podcast is our megaphone on the top of the mountain. We just need you to share it with more people, so more people hear what we're saying, right?
Speaker 1:You're part of this huge ripple effect and it's like another part of the movement. Yeah, and one of our members said recently. She said you know what I keep telling my husband don't talk about it, don't tell other people they need to eat plant-based, just live it out in front of them, be the living example, and that's in any area of our life. But with health you can do this. Disease can be reversed, disease can be prevented. It is not natural to develop high blood pressure and high cholesterol and all these things that are happening as we age over time. That is not normal. But we're taught it's normal and we're taught we just need to take this medicine and that one and this one and that one to manage the symptoms. What we wanna show you how to do is get the things into your life on a regular basis that are gonna decrease the inflammation, decrease your risk of infection and boost your immunity, and that is whole plant foods.
Speaker 2:I'm over here smiling because I just had a thought yeah, back in the garden originally with Adam, there was big farming, not big pharma, that's all I know, no. We don't have sickness because we have a medicine deficiency.
Speaker 1:Right, right Now again.
Speaker 2:We always say this we're not against medications. There is absolutely a time and a place for it, but we feel like there's so many times. If we just do the right things, they won't be necessary, or we can at least minimize the amount that we need.
Speaker 1:Agreed 100%. So now we've gotten the big key Just eat more whole plant foods all the time, anita. I don't know how to do that. All I can consider as a side salad or depriving myself in one way. Sister, we have an episode coming up for you because we're gonna talk about three simple ways to make getting healthy uncomplicated and un-overwhelming, so that you can actually do it, so you can enjoy it. So look for that that's coming up and, honestly, go back and play any podcast episode. This whole podcast is about making this lifestyle enjoyable, so it's sustainable for you. If you don't enjoy it, if it doesn't work with your busy schedule, girl, you're not gonna do it. I mean, you know, it's true, you're not gonna do it and we're gonna talk about that more, at least not for the long term.
Speaker 2:You may do it for a little while, get results, but then what got you there you hate and it won't keep you going.
Speaker 1:It won't keep you there absolutely not, and so we're going to be talking about that because that is super important. But if you're fighting a cold, fighting an infection or just wanna keep yourself, well, the absolute best number one thing that you can do for yourself is learn how to eat more whole plant foods in the way that's quick and easy for you and taste absolutely amazing. Tip number two now we're getting into some specifics. Okay, but what are some specific things? Some specific key ingredients I can get into my life on a regular basis. That will be easy for me, and I always think about this. That'll bump up the flavors in your food. So don't think, oh, I've gotta start eating this, I have to start eating this, Start asking how can I get more of this thing in the way that I enjoy? So the first thing is ginger. You gotta have ginger. Why is ginger important, Jared?
Speaker 2:I'm pulling out the prescription pad right now and I'm writing ginger on it and then handing it to you, my listener. That's your prescription, my favorite kind of gift. Ginger is important with sickness because it has multiple things that it does to make you feel much better. First thing, if you have a respiratory cold that could include sinuses, nasal cavity, it has been researched and shown that it helps open the airway in a way that is very similar, akin to albuterol, like for when people have asthma and they have the inhaler. It opens the airway. This has that same mechanism of action.
Speaker 1:So it helps open Naturally. Naturally helps you breathe better. No bad side effects.
Speaker 2:No bad side effects. It also helps to suppress cough. Independent of what I just told you, it is known to help to decrease cough. So if you've got a lower respiratory infection, bronchitis, whatever, it will help ease that for you. Now we love to have ginger as a tea, and if you add a little honey to that to flavor it, honey also has been shown to help with cough. So a little one-two punch right there, but going on, ginger helps to fight bacterial infections and viral infections.
Speaker 1:Wow.
Speaker 2:When you have a cold, what are you fighting?
Speaker 1:You're fighting most likely a viral infection, right, and so what happens with antibiotics? Do antibiotics fight viruses?
Speaker 2:Antibiotics do not as a whole, unless there's just some kind of weird interaction there. They generally do not fight viral infections. So when you go into a provider's office and you have a common cold and you are given a prescription for an antibiotic, it's likely not going to do anything unless for some reason maybe there's a secondary infection with a bacteria. That's possible, but for just your general viral cold it's just going to run its course.
Speaker 1:And the thing is though is that you're saying that if you take the antibiotic, it's probably not going to help with the virus. That's what you're saying it's not going to help with the viral infection.
Speaker 2:It's just going to run its course. Now, many times, though people they wait a few days. They go see a provider, they get an antibiotic. A few days later they get better and they attribute that to the antibiotic, but in actuality, it was just that that was the natural course of your body fighting it off.
Speaker 1:And since we're talking about immunity and your immune system here, I want to talk about one of your biggest defenses and that is your gut bacteria to helping you fight off infection. Many times, like a long time ago in our past and maybe this for you now or maybe you already know, but I've got to share it just in case you don't it's almost like we're kind of trained in our society with all the pharmaceutical ads and just like when you get a cold, you're just going to go and ask for an antibiotic. Now, I know a lot of you don't do that, but maybe you're kind of still there and you think I'm sick, it's not going away, I think I need to go grab an antibiotic. But what you've got to understand is antibiotics aren't discriminant about what they kill, and so they also destroy your gut flora, your healthy gut bacteria, and it can take quite a while to build that back.
Speaker 2:And it's not just your gut bacteria, I mean any women, any sisters out there. If you've had an antibiotic and then you get a yeast infection, right, it's disrupting the flora, the normal flora, throughout the entire body. Now all hope is not lost. You can restore it, but it may still not go back to the exact same way that it was previously. So, again, use it if needed. Don't avoid it if it's something that's life-threatening. Obviously, by all means if you've got pneumonia or something like that. But we want to encourage you to try to use it as sparingly. But we've got a great tool here ginger. If you hit that ginger quickly likely what you have when it's a cold is viral it will help you start feeling better very quickly, avoiding a need for an antibiotic.
Speaker 1:And you hit the nail on the head right there. You pulled out a big key quickly. When you first start feeling symptoms or I'll back it up and even say do this when you have been around someone that you know is sick or they were coughing a little bit, when you're around him and you just think you know I don't want to start feeling symptoms Great time to start adding these specifics that we're giving you in, the first one being ginger.
Speaker 2:And there's no downside to it. No, no, there's no downside.
Speaker 1:It makes you feel great. It actually will give you energy too, which is amazing. I mean, there was a time when we used to do ginger shots, so we'd be juicing ginger and lemon.
Speaker 2:Turmeric.
Speaker 1:Turmeric, and I mean that's the next thing we're going to talk about. Turmeric. Ginger and turmeric are two things that you can get in root form fresh. Many stores carry it. Our public usually has it. Now Whole foods carries it. There's a lot of different places you can get it. I think you can probably even order the root online. So try to buy it fresh because it is unbelievable the punch that it packs. So go with fresh. So we've got ginger root, fresh turmeric root, and with turmeric you want to put in black pepper fresh black pepper because that helps your body absorb it a lot more readily 2000% increase in the level of the actual curcumin levels in your body.
Speaker 2:Right, and so it doesn't take much, just a little grind Mm hmm, it's amazing, although you don't even have to taste it.
Speaker 1:I mean, seriously, I've been known to put it in my smoothie. I don't even know it's there, but I know it works to help the turmeric get into my body, and so I do it. Next we have oregano. Okay, this is kind of the herbs and spice category, but oregano is a monster anti-viral, antibacterial fighter on your side. This is the soldier you want, next to you, boosting your immune system and fighting your battles.
Speaker 2:Since you're using that analogy, this is really more like special forces.
Speaker 1:It is special forces. These are the special forces. Absolutely Like the.
Speaker 2:Marines it goes in first and just wipes it out.
Speaker 1:Well, yeah, but you've got that first line of defense of you're always going to be eating more whole plant foods, more and more whole plant foods. And then you've got the special forces that go in and just drop these gigantor bombs that wipe out the bad stuff that's there, but at the same time they are selective. Isn't it interesting that the things that God's made that are naturally good for our bodies are naturally selective. They kill the harmful things, but guess what they don't do? They don't kill the beneficial things.
Speaker 2:They don't wreck your system.
Speaker 1:And can boost them, can boost the beneficial.
Speaker 2:And, really honestly, these are things that have benefits beyond just the antibiral, antibacterial properties anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, so these are things that we should be eating on a regular basis. Right, Exactly Oregano ginger, the turmeric, getting them regularly. It doesn't have to be with every meal but you know, throughout the weeks day to day.
Speaker 1:And if you could add one more thing in there, what would it be?
Speaker 2:Ooh. One more thing beyond that, Because those are some of the powerhouses that we do.
Speaker 1:I've got one written down. I'm just testing to see if we're on the same level.
Speaker 2:Well, I've heard of some other and we've used these other spices If oregano wasn't available, maybe, like thyme, rosemary also supposed to be good, okay, just giving you extra stuff. I was moving on from the herbs and spices you got bonuses, bonuses.
Speaker 1:Think it grows underground. It can make you stinky, but it doesn't matter because it tastes really good. Oh yeah, that's how to not think of this.
Speaker 2:Yeah, potatoes are amazing, but I don't think that they fight colds.
Speaker 1:Maybe not a super immunity. They may have stuff in there, you don't know.
Speaker 2:Well, they probably do, but as far as like go-tos when I'm feeling bad garlic, that should have been the first thing in my mind.
Speaker 1:Yeah, bar none. Shame on me, Shame on you. It fights viruses and bacteria and it makes things taste amazing, sister, get it into your foods. Now that we've shared this list, I want to let you in on how my mind works as a busy woman, because now I'm thinking how can I get multiple of these at one time into my life? How is this going to work for me in real life? What is the simplest way that I can actually consistently do that? And that's the same question I want you to be asking yourself Jot it down on a piece of paper and then, after today's episode, what you're going to do is you're going to brainstorm. Now, maybe you're not a pen to paper kind of girl, maybe you love notes, maybe you love keeping stuff in organized in word Wherever you're going to see it on a sticky note that you can put next to you so you remember to get these things into your life. And I want you to brainstorm how you can best do it. For me, it's getting multiple things into one item I'm going to eat. I mean that's just a no-brainer. So how can I get ginger, turmeric, pepper, oregano all those things into my life in one fell swoop? I'm gonna make a smoothie, absolutely 100%. That's one go-to. There are many other things like I could brainstorm at least 20 to 30 things with you right now, but you gotta get on with your day, so I want you to come up with the things that are gonna work best for you. What are you actually going to consistently do for yourself throughout your lifetime, not just cold and flu season that you can actually make sure you're packing these things in on a regular basis? The garlic I'm probably not gonna throw it to my smoothie, but I might grate some of my microplane grater into my guacamole something I'm eating a salad, a salad dressing. I don't have to grate it. I don't have to dirty a grater. I'm gonna toss that into my dressing or sauce. I do that all the time with garlic, like daily we're eating raw garlic cloves. Why? Because of exactly what we shared with you here today. These are the game changers, but you know what? They will only change your life if you eat them consistently. How are you gonna do that as a busy woman? How are you gonna do that as a busy brother? The only way you're gonna make that happen is if it's something that you enjoy, that you can consistently do on a regular basis, and the more you can get into one thing, the better. Of course, this is not a complete list, but I want you to just start imagining how many beneficial ingredients for your body that your creator has put into just the simple whole plant foods we mentioned to you today. Tens of thousands have already been identified, and those haven't even been named yet. So step one to boost your immunity is to find the ways to regularly enjoy more whole plant foods. If you're not sure where to start, grab the Power On Plants Cookbook and learn to make one new favorite and then your next new favorite. This is how things can start improving rapidly for you health-wise. And then, if it's specifically colder flu season and you wanna pack an even bigger immune-boosting punch, start adding in as much raw ginger, turmeric root, black pepper, oregano and raw garlic as you can in all the ways we've shared with you today, plus your brainstormed ways, which are super important. Do not forget to do this exercise, sister. This is your homework for today. Please make sure you do this, because this is where the rubber meets the road. This is where your life starts changing, and this is what Jared and I are all about. We are so here for this with you, and after you do this, we want you to come right now to our free exclusive group, the Podcast Insiders Experience. Yeah, that spells out pie, cause we like pie. We love pie and we're serving up the good stuff in here for you. This is a place where you can come and connect with each other, start meeting each other and getting to know one another. You'll never miss out on a podcast episode. You can start getting some questions answered and you're gonna come in and the first thing I want you to do is share this list. Take a picture of your list. Which one of these ingredients are you gonna put in? Maybe you're putting in two or three of them. That's great. What are you gonna get them into easily?
Speaker 2:And I would also say the importance of having this list ahead of time is because if a cold hits you and sometimes they hit quickly you may not feel good enough to even make it to the bed to lay down to rest, much less to think about. Okay, how am I gonna get some ginger? So, think about this ahead of time. So you have your game plan.
Speaker 1:It's always best to be prepared, and this is how you set yourself up for success and build a strong immune system. So, to gain access and come in and start getting to know us more and share what you're gonna do, the specific step that you're gonna take, come to poweronplantscom forward slash P-I-E, pi podcast insider's experience. And then the testimonials that come from those same people who've gotten into the right community. Everything starts to change for you then. So what are you waiting for, sister?
