I hope you're having a fantastic week that's filled with blessings. Jared and I recently had something happen and I just have to share it with you, because Sometimes it's the little things. It's that profound knowledge Jared calls it.
Speaker 2:We're little revelations.
Speaker 1:Well, you have those little things happen and it just blows your mind and you think what in the world? So we recently had gone to this store. Now we didn't go to the farmers market this time. Yes, we think the farmers market it's amazing. Yes, we think you ought to be shopping there because you're gonna get amazing tasting food, because the odds are it's going to be fresher, especially if you get to know your farmer and you find out that it's somebody who's actually growing it and not just buying produce at the local store and bringing it to the farmers market and making it look pretty in their little baskets. Yes, that happens. So get to know your farmer. But what we're sharing with you is something that just happened from an apple that we bought at a local store. So we went I guess it was about last week we went to the store and we picked up a big bag of apples.
Speaker 2:I think you had sent me on a grocery store run that time.
Speaker 1:That sounds right. I sent you on a grocery store run. So it comes home. He has these apples. We put all the groceries away and maybe a day or two later I grab out an apple, like I often do, and I love my little apple slicer y'all. So I got my apple slicer out. I'll put a link for it down below in the show notes for you. I love this apple slicer because it cores it. Okay. So I'm totally getting off topic here, but I have to share with you about this because you need these game-changing tips and this is what we're all about. So it's sliced it into these little slices that I just love. It's not these big fat wedges, it's tiny slices, and so you have more slices of the apple to enjoy with your brownie batter, hummus or your whatever dip you're putting it in. I mean you just can't go wrong. So get yourself an apple slicer, links down for you in the show notes. So I get it out. Grab my apple slicer, I slice them up, take a bite, and I remember clear as day this is how much it hit me. I mean it was just such a huge moment for me. The flavor just exploded in my mouth and I looked over and I see them and they're sitting down to watch a show. So I grabbed an apple for my snack during the time we were watching the show with this dip and I dipped it in and taken a bite and I was on my way over there to walk over to them and I said what in the world? And they all look back. I see all these heads turned back to me and I said where did you get this apple? He said I got it at the store. I said I don't understand. Like have you learned a new method for picking apples? Was there something special you did this time to get one that tasted so good? What are we doing wrong in the past? Why does it not always taste this way?
Speaker 2:Well, and we had gotten it from a store where we don't normally get it because it's a little more expensive. But this time it was closer to home and I had mentioned and just just we're talking a chain grocery store here. Chain grocery store normally where we go to get them, where they're fresher, less expensive, is about 20, 30 minutes away. Our local store is five or 10 minutes away, but I mentioned that the price was lower this time. I said probably because now they're in season and they're more readily available.
Speaker 1:Okay, Did you catch that?
Speaker 2:Yes, and I didn't make that connection. I just said they're probably in season because the price was XYZ.
Speaker 1:Yeah, thinking about the price. And then she said that's why they taste so good, they're in season.
Speaker 2:They were sweet crispy, not mealy. This is.
Speaker 1:Apple season. Y'all, this is Apple season. Even if you're not listening to this when it's Apple season, don't stop this episode, because I'm going to tell you why. You got to shop in season. Find out what's in season in your area. This tip will change everything for you. You think it won't, you think it just sounds like some floofy little tip, but this is where the river meets the road. If you want the food, the produce that you're buying, to have explosive flavor, you want it to taste amazing when you bite into it. This is key. And, yes, if you buy at your local farmer's market or your produce stand and you're getting from your local farmer and they're growing it, absolutely it's going to taste better. But even when it's in season, just go into your local store and buying it. Look for it locally. Look for the local, because sometimes the stores will have locally grown apples. I know, I've seen that it sprouts. I've seen that at Whole Foods, I've seen it at different places locally grown apples, locally grown citrus. Pick it up. Now is the time, okay, when it's locally grown and it's in season. You're not going to believe. This is when, in the summertime, you pick up peaches and you bite into them. And in Georgia, in Tennessee, even if you can get them shipped in from there, like within a couple of days, and get them pretty fresh, that juice is rolling down your arm. It is the sweetest, sugary thing you forgot.
Speaker 2:The intensity of the flavor is just like nothing else.
Speaker 1:You forgot. You think you remember how good it was, until you bite into it and it's the best one you ever had. Again, for the next season, again, this is just what happens. It's citrus season right now.
Speaker 2:Yeah, at the time of this podcast, we're going into citrus season, so oranges, grapefruits there's so much more citrus than just lemon, lime, oranges and grapefruit. Okay. So then the next key we're blown by the yeah yeah, jared's sharing the next key here.
Speaker 1:So the next key is please don't just buy that apple or that orange that you're used to when the citrus is in season. Get yourself some pomelo, buy yourself some kumquats and enjoy them. You can pop the whole thing in your mouth. They are delicious.
Speaker 2:Now bonus tip here With kumquats, don't peel them.
Speaker 1:Oh no.
Speaker 2:The sweetness is actually in the skin, the rind.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:And then the insides roll tart, but it balances. It's God's sweet tart.
Speaker 1:I'm telling you, those little things are incredible Especially we didn't know that at first and we ate them.
Speaker 2:We thought we don't like these they're really tarts because we weren't eating the whole fruit there.
Speaker 1:Yeah, if you're in Florida or you're getting them shipped in from Florida and it's the winter time and you're getting citrus in, buy all man's, buy it. This is when you want to try the new things too. Satzuma, eat them. They're wonderful. Blood oranges instead of just the regular navel oranges or Valencia you always buy. Branch out Limes, lemons, eat them. They are great for you. What a great way to replace your salt. Okay, vinegar limes and lemons. Go back and listen to our episode on replacing salt in your food, even if you don't have high blood pressure, even if you don't have swelling or inflammation right now, you've got to hear that episode because you don't want to develop it or you want to help your elders who already have those problems.
Speaker 2:Or you just want another way to add amazing flavor to your food.
Speaker 1:Oh man, we're all about it and it will do that. Citrus will absolutely do that for you.
Speaker 2:Other things that we've eaten that when we get them in season, they're just amazing cantaloupes. If you get a cantaloupe out of season, it's okay.
Speaker 1:Now you're making me wish it was summertime, but it doesn't have that sweetness and that flavor.
Speaker 2:Our oldest daughter, when she was really young, used to call it juicy, juicy, exactly.
Speaker 1:She even would sign for it. She would go juicy, juicy, more juicy, more juicy because she loved cantaloupes I meant those were her words for it juicy, when it was in season.
Speaker 2:So watermelons when they're in season. Now can you get apples, kind of quote unquote, out of season? Yes, but those are generally flown from countries in the southern hemisphere because it's summer there when it's winter here. And we're not saying that's a bad thing, especially if your local supermarket can get it where it's not picked so early before it ripens. But to get the best flavor, if you can get it when it's in season, it's local. It's been allowed to stay on the plant until it's peak of ripeness, so it's going to have that flavor, but it's also going to have the best nutrient content that you can get.
Speaker 1:So if you want to eat less sodium for health, you want to decrease your salt so that you cannot develop high blood pressure, so you can fight it off, so you can decrease inflammation or help those in your life who just don't feel good. The next episode you're going to want to listen to is episode 243. How to eat less sodium for health and still enjoy delicious tasting meals you love. And one of the tips I'm going to share for you here is get your citrus, and especially when it's in season. So if you're listening close to the time we put this podcast out, absolutely Now is the time. Look for Florida grown it is amazing and don't just get the same old things. Try something new. This has been all about one thing you can do and I think we've learned about two or three bonuses in, like we always do but we want you to have the keys that really are going to get you there, that are going to make all the results happen in your life that you're after when it comes to your health, when it comes to feeling your absolute best. Do not miss out on what's in season. Google it online. What is in season in my area right now? What is in season for blah, whatever month, or you can just look at that season the best fruits to eat fresh in the fall. There's so many different ways. You can ask it, but you want to have any trouble. It's going to pull up lists for you. Get those things into your life. They're going to not only taste better, they're going to be more nutrient dense. They're going to fuel your body even well, but the flavors are going to blow your mind.
Speaker 2:And it's not just fruit. We've kind of concentrated on that for this, but the green leafies you have your warm leaf lettuces and your cooler leaf lettuces. You have your cooler season squashes and your summer squashes.
Speaker 1:These things will make all the difference for you when you actually start doing them and you know what's going to help you start doing them getting in a community of like-minded women and men who are doing the same thing that you're doing. They will encourage you, they will inspire you, they will give you ideas of okay, now I've got my apples, now they're in season. I've got my citrus. What do I do with it? What can I use it in? You want to know? Come into the podcast Insiders Experience. You can gain access by going right now to poweronplantscom. That stands for Podcast Insiders Experience, which is just as delicious as pie, because it's going to help you take your health to a whole new level.
