Anita:

No, because I always want to learn, I always want to grow, I always want to feel better and be stronger. And so Jarrod and are constantly in our pursuit o change and learning and growing And that's where we want you t be to. Because when you're i that place of where you want t learn and grow and embrace ne things, and start trying, couple new things await you whole life can look different a the end of the course of th year, even in a couple of weeks An

Jarrod:

I will say it's amazing how much hope it can bring just doing exactly what you're talking about. Because you learn one or two new facts. And it changes your perspective. It changes your mindset, you learn a new tool that you can use, and you see the difference. And then you have hope where there was no hope before. Absent that's extremely powerful.

Anita: INTRO:

Hey there, sunshine. Welcome to the Power On Plants Podcast, where your host, Jarrod and Anita Roussel and we're absolutely head over heels for whole plant foods, and helping you navigate this incredible plant based journey. That's because our lives have been completely changed by plant based goodness, we used to struggle every day with excess pounds and low energy, vascular disease, joint pain and lack of sleep, just to name a few. And even though we're medical professionals, we still weren't getting practical answers that actually worked. So we dug into the research, we started living what we learned. And now we both have our lives back. And that's what we want for you to the truth is you can do this, and it's not hard, you just need a way that will bring real and lasting change. And that path, it has to be simple and enjoyable. And it's got to be delicious to you. So are you ready to live your life to the fullest, then you're in the right place, because living without limits. That's what power plants is all about. So pull up your chair, grab a matcha latte, and let's get started. Today, we're talking about one of the most important things when it comes to getting healthy. And that's your mindset. Now, why does mindset matter so much? Well, we all know that what we think determines how we live or how we act on a daily basis. And so if you can get the right mindset around things, and get rid of the old things that you thought were true for so long, then and basically embrace the new ones right, then things can start to change for you. That's when you're at a place where you can start to learn and grow and move forward. So today we're talking about the mindset around irreversible diseases. Because somehow in our culture, in our times, we've gotten the idea that if a doctor walks in with a white coat on or a PA a mid level, I'm gonna pick on Jarrod, right, and they bring it and they say to you, you know, you have this diagnosis, this is what you have, you know, it's a lifelong thing you're going to have to deal with. And here are the medications or here the types of treatments that we can do for that. What you need to think about is, is this going to affect or get to the root cause of the problem. Because if you have something going on your body, it's like your body holding up a sign, or better yet a megaphone screaming, help me.

Jarrod:

Help me something's not right, something's going on here.

Anita:

It's a warning signal, I want you to start seeing it as a warning signal and not a death sentence. So I'm just going to be real with you here. Because I've been in that situation where I've been sitting in that chair, and that doctor has been delivering that news to me. And it feels hopeless, when you see him as the final authority, or her as the final authority on what's going on in your life. But the truth is that you have a lot more control over what's going on in your body than you think. Especially we know when it comes to the most common diseases in our culture today.

Jarrod:

Well, earlier you mentioned the word treatment. But when we think of treating something, are we thinking of managing it? Are we thinking of curing it, we're thinking of, like you said, getting at the root cause getting rid of what's going on?

Anita:

Well, I know back in the day, when I was thinking about treating it, I was thinking about I want to name for this thing, like whatever's going on. In my body, I've got to find the doctor, or the PA or the nurse practitioner, someone, anyone who can tell me what is going on with my body. And then once we find it out that way, we'll know what to do what medicines to take. So I'm thinking treatment I want to name so we can treat it. But now we know what we know. And we're going to share with you what we know. And that is that a lot of these diseases are reversible when you can get to the root cause. So what is the root cause? Well, as you look at other nations, besides you know, we're in the United States, right, you might not be listening from the United States. But sadly, however, it is a lot of the Western ways and how we eat the Western diet has been adopted by other Asian other countries, right. And so as other countries have adopted the standard American diet, what have we seen happen with the help in these countries, and they followed it?

Jarrod:

It's deteriorated right? Japan was a great example where a lot of these chronic diseases were, I won't say non existent, but a very small percentage. And then as they've adopted our, our way of eating, it's so sad to say it's our standard, but it has become our standard way of eating, that the blood pressure, the diabetes, the obesity, and all these things have just

Anita:

skyrocketed.

Jarrod:

Skyrocketed.

Anita:

Absolutely. And you can look at the exact dates that have maps charted of these things. There are many research studies that have been done on this. So it's well documented that these diseases start happening when the way of eating starts changing, and the way of living starts changing.

Jarrod:

And you can't blame it on genetics, because this form is either within a generation or within one generation of people. So it's not like it's been, you know, 10s of hundreds of years or whatever, that the genes have changed. You can't blame it on that.

Anita:

Right. And that's a great point. Absolutely. And so, what diseases are they? What are the diseases that the doctors see the most, when they open that door to their waiting room? And they they Usher people back? What are the things that we're fighting with the most right? For me, it was autoimmune disease, it was vascular disease. These are on the list of the things that are the most common diseases today. Okay. So these are the ones that I have the most history with skin issues, I had some issues with breakouts and things like that I was overweight. So you wouldn't have looked at me and said, you know, she's really, really got to do something about her weight. But I definitely was carrying a lot of extra pounds. And Jarrod and I lost over 50 pounds together. We weren't even trying to lose weight living this way, and hopefully plant base, but it just happened because our bodies were getting what they needed. And all of a sudden, these diseases started to heal,

Jarrod:

they mentioned people wouldn't look at you and think that you needed to lose weight. I think part of that was because of shifting perceptions of what a normal weight has become. That's

Anita:

a great point,

Jarrod:

you're 50 6070 years ago, we would have a different perspective on that. And and what we do right now is just to look at us from the outside, especially with clothing on if you had it where it was, you know, not too tight, not too loose, you wouldn't look at us and think wow, they look like they're, you know, significantly overweight, but we were carrying 2030 pounds each over when we needed to.

Anita:

Absolutely. And that affects so many different things. Because when you start carrying extra fat, what you may not know is the fat in your body that you carry produces hormones. It's a huge hormone producer. And so you're upping your estrogen. So then men are struggling with

Jarrod:

well, low testosterone and the effects of that, but it's the fat that's under your skin. Right? So because we're differentiating between that and the fat that's inside your abdominal belly, right? It's a little different. But yes, that it can be the major producer of estrogen within the body, even more so for women than their ovaries, which is mind blowing to think because we, we learn in biology that for women, your ovaries produce estrogen, and that's what gives you femininity, that it's what makes you a woman. But when you get that excess fat on you, then you're getting a lot of excess estrogen from that fat, which can then lead into things like breast cancers, breast cancers that are sensitive to those estrogens,

Anita:

right, or we see men dealing with not being as masculine as they once were, you know, and that's kind of rampant in our society, I think it's more than just what they're eating. I think there's a lot of societal things that are happening around that as well. But there are a lot of different things that can happen with your health when you're carrying that extra fat. And as a woman, you need to be aware of how that affects men and women to, you know, carrying those extra hormones. It's just not good for you. That's not what you're meant to have. And then your body has extra fat that's producing extra estrogen that again, like Jared said, puts you at risk for breast cancer. Or like me, I had fibrocystic breasts. I had knots all over my breast. I mean, hopefully that's not too much TMI, but my daughter would tell me I would this is just normal. I mean, it's a variant. And it won't ever develop in anything. But there is a history of breast cancer in my family a strong history of cancer. And so it was concerning for me. There's a history of breast cancer in my family.

Jarrod:

It's not that that'll affect you. It's pretty rampant,

Anita:

right. But all that to say if you're dealing with that and you have fibrocystic breast disease, I'm going to tell you that's not normal. How do I know that's not normal? Because mine is completely gone. Now. I don't have a single lamp. Why is that? Why do I no longer have that? Because I've changed the way I live because I've learned to love the food that actually loves me back that builds the life that I want to live. And thankfully, a lot of those things just disappeared that I didn't even think could ever disappear. Because when someone walked in and gave me a diagnosis or told me I was gonna have to deal with something or said to me once again, we don't know what's going on with you. We don't know let's do some more tests. You know, all those things started disappearing when I started eating healthy plant based. Are we completely 100% where we want to be? No because that I always want to learn, I always want to grow, I always want to feel better and be stronger. And so Jared and I are constantly in our pursuit of change and learning and growing. And that's where we want you to be to. Because when you're in that place of where you want to learn, and grow and embrace new things, and start trying a couple new things awake, your whole life can look different at the end of the course of the year, even in a couple of weeks.

Jarrod:

And I will say it's amazing how much hope it can bring just doing exactly what you're talking about. Because you learn one or two new facts. And it changes your perspective, it changes your mindset, you learn a new tool that you can use, and you see the difference. And then you have hope where there was no hope before. Absent that's extremely powerful, is it energizing, it's motivating. It's just amazing.

Anita:

When it's you and all of a sudden you have that mindset shift, and you start realizing, and maybe a doctor walks in and gives you that diagnosis. And now you're thinking maybe there's something I can do. And often there is I mean, there are people that have healed from in stage heart disease in stage cancer, where they were given an amount of time that they were supposed to live, and they've lived well beyond it and are now free of cancer free of diabetes, stage

Jarrod:

four kidney disease. I've heard stories of that being reversed, right?

Anita:

Get online and search. I mean, Jared, and I have our testimonials, we'll be happy to share with you anytime you can go back and listen to my testimonial was the first episode of this podcast actually, and I've shared more along the way on other podcast episodes as well. But we have clients that we've seen this happened time. And again, we see this happen for people, we have other friends and relatives, just people we know that have walked this journey. But all you have to do is get online and Google pull food plant based, and whatever the disease is okay, and so I'm going to give you the most common diseases, but whatever you're struggling with, look at it. These are the things that people struggle with the most. And that may be something that you or someone you love is struggling with. So we want you to know this podcast episode, that there is hope for you, there's hope for your loved one. If you're willing to have the mindset shift to change,

Jarrod:

and you have more power than you realize,

Anita:

Oh, so much more power. Alright, so we've got obesity, we've talked about high blood pressure, this is common that high blood pressure or versus and just completely goes away. Now are we telling you come off your high blood pressure medicine and start eating plants? No, you need to be monitored by your physician. And to be able to decrease those in a way that will work for your body. As you eat more and more plants.

Jarrod:

You have to do it wisely. Because if you're especially if you're on a lot of medications, if you're on some pretty significant medications, and you come off of them just right all at once, then your blood pressure can shoot up and that can put you at risk for things like stroke, heart attack, when you could throw a blood clot I mean a lot of different things. So you have to do it wisely. And you have to do you need to be monitored by your healthcare professional.

Anita:

Yes, but get more and more plant whole plant foods. Listen to our episode on five foundational foods or any one of our 100 plus episodes, where we show you how to do this in an easy way. It's all there for you. We put it out there for you to help you out. It's all free. It costs you nothing. Just your time to listen. So popping in your you know, turn on Play, press play when you're cooking. I like to listen to podcasts when I'm cooking meals. When I'm in the shower when I'm getting ready to go.

Jarrod:

When I'm in the car. It's rolling University.

Anita:

University. I love that. Yeah, cuz we're constantly learning and that that is an awesome place to be. So anyway, back to the main thing. So we've got obesity, high blood pressure we talked about and why is that? Where does that come from? Well, it's ever all vascular disease, you can try so many of the common diseases, back to high to vascular disease, like high blood pressure comes from that. You know, you have heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer's, now they're linking with vascular issues. We've got digestive disorder problems with with high with vascular disease issues. I keep going back to high blood pressure. What else are you thinking spine it things? Yeah, that was something

Jarrod:

we've talked about before, and how that just really blew my mind about degenerative disc that there are small arteries leading to the disk. And when that blood flow is compromised, what's going to happen, it's not going to get the nutrients that it needs. It's not going to take the waste away. And those discs are going to degenerate over time. I've heard arthritis long term. There.

Anita:

Yeah, what I've happened, what's happened with my joints since we've been doing this. I mean, I used to be in constant pain, I would cry. When I had to take shower just because of the pain of the pressure of my fingers on my head, the pressure in my joints, the pressure in my shoulders. My shoulders up. I was awful. Yeah, I reached a point where I had frozen shoulder, I couldn't even move my shoulders. I didn't have surgery, I changed the way I ate and I moved a little more. I mean, there's so many things you can do. But what we want you to think about is these, these common diseases have a common ancestor. I want you to think about that for a minute. They come from a common place. So all these diseases are like different variants or different expressions of the same root problems. So if you've got Your blood clogging up because you've had damage to the walls of your arteries and now plaque stick to them. Do you know that those can actually be reverse the actual damage to your arterial wall can be fixed by your body? If it's given the right foods that are non inflammatory, and it can heal your body actually can heal those. It has been documented by and film. I mean, you can look at patient angiograms. Yeah, he grants, there's one we just saw yesterday where this guy for two years after he started healthy plant base, and not only did one artery that was majorly clogged open back up,

Jarrod:

and that was the one that they were pointing out in the film.

Anita:

Exactly, we're looking at it going, we see like 100 different vessels

Jarrod:

there these little, we said, Look, we looked at each other, look at all those other little ones, they're not mentioning, they're just mentioned the big one with the rest of the heart,

Anita:

right. And you can even see them before he ate whole food plant based and after he ate it for two years. I mean, look at the change. So the guys reverse heart disease. This

Jarrod:

was a doctor, right? The patient that they were showing was a physician,

Anita:

right? But anybody can do this right? Anyone when you

Jarrod:

immediate, but he didn't have to have surgery, he didn't end up having to have a bypass a stent or anything, but his body heal.

Anita:

But you've got to think about how long did it take me to get to where I am now. So I'm gonna talk about that all the time. Because we're in such a fast pace fast food fast life fax me now. Yeah, right, fix me. Now I just want to antibiotic, whatever I need. Just give it to me. And I'll take it and I'll go on with my life. But you've got to be intentional about healing your body. And it's very possible. It is not hard. It is very simple. When you know how to do it. And you find somebody who can encourage you to walk this journey in a way that works for you. You know, it's not a one size fits all. But the commonality is what you're putting in your body and what you're no longer putting in your body. So you got to learn how to get the oils out. Well, how do I cook without oil? You tell me I can't have oil anymore. I like all the things on my food. Well, plant foods, by nature have fats in them. So you learn how to use those in a way to replicate the oils that you use to use. It's not hard. You just need somebody to show you how right? So we're talking about now, the vascular vascular disease and that affects so many things. But let's go to the gut for a minute. I mean, gut diseases are rampant. You've got GERD reflux, you've got hiatal hernias, we've got cancers colon cancer. Oh, my word. I mean, it's so severe. Now everybody's getting screened every year after certain age, right? Why is that? Well, it's a tube that goes right through you. It's the tube that every bit of food you eat pretty much a lot of it touches, whatever is not absorbed, touches that well. And actually, whatever is absorbed is touched at the top, you know, so it's going to be touching your body the whole way down that tube. And the tube is going to get sick, if it doesn't have what it needs. And it has what it doesn't need and what inflames it. And let's get to the gut bacteria. You know, we've got podcast episodes on this as well. But you have good gut bacteria that work for you. They produce hormones, or they produce not hormones.

Jarrod:

They produce dopamine and serotonin. So these are neurotransmitters that he uses. And that affects depression. Yeah. And affect anxiety.

Anita:

Yes. And so what this what's the food of these good bacteria in your gut? What's the food? They have a food that they thrive on? Is it me? It's not me. I made me destroy the good ones. Okay. I'll tell ya, there are some bacteria in your gut that do left me. Well, that's true. And that is not your friend. Now.

Jarrod:

Those are the pathogenic ones.

Anita:

You do not want to grow those bacteria.

Jarrod:

But what your gut bacteria eats is fiber. Yeah, we find fiber.

Anita:

The healthy gut bacteria eat fiber is their food, right? Where do you find it? plants, plants, animals have none. Dairy has none. eggs have none. So if you're not getting a load of whole plant foods in your meals on a regular basis in your snacks on a regular basis, if you don't learn how to do that, those gut bacteria are starved and may no longer be present right now. But there's hope you can rebuild that. You just got to know

Jarrod:

how right you can do it as quickly as 30 days there. It's a whole different episode. But yes, it's these are changes that can happen fairly quickly.

Anita:

Absolutely. Type Two Diabetes. We just did a podcast episode on carbs and type two diabetes. Okay. Type Two Diabetes is common. People commonly reverse it. It is a disease of lifestyle. Oh, so what do you mean by that?

Jarrod:

Well, it means the things that you're doing in your life on a daily basis, what you have on your fork. The rest that you get at night, eh, and getting outside in the sunshine on a regular basis moving moving reducing stress, having healthy relation ships with other people around you and when we got

Anita:

as well and your careers that most important absolutely in your career satisfaction, okay, all these things these are things we teach about inside our membership Why are we passionate about this stuff because if it can heal you from the inside out, it can heal you from the inside out Jared and I are living examples of it. You know, I don't lay on my side any more in here my neck I don't hear that anymore. I'm so thankful that's gone. Now I have a lot of different things that have changed here does as well. And we just want the same for you because we know this is possible. Sometimes it takes a while because you've been living the way you've been living for a while, you know, a lot of these processes can begin in childhood. Childhood we have an episode about that

Jarrod:

heart disease beginning in childhood,

Anita:

and it's documented, it's common

Jarrod:

for five six years old, the fatty streaks start building up so these are things that have been going on for your entire life so they're not going to go away immediately.

Anita:

right but we don't want you to think they and heal exactly we don't want you to think that because it's been going on for a long time it can't go away. We also don't want you to believe that other lies of things like Well, I'm just getting old or so I'll a Keno that's just common. No aches and pains go away doing this. I'm not kidding you. They go away. This can change your life. I was sitting on the couch every day long not able to get up sitting on a stool to cook meals when Jarrod came home, crying because I couldn't go up a flight of stairs chat my children into bed at night worried about picking up my daughter when I first met her. When we flew to China to bring her home when we adopted her, you know thinking about I'm not going to be able to hold her because my arms hurt so bad. What am I going to do and she needs a mom and she needs love and hugs and it's just it's heartbreaking how this can alter what you want in your life. And we know that you have dreams and you have goals. Maybe you want to build a business. Maybe you want to be able to chase your kids around and enjoy your life just more on daily basis doing whatever you were placed here to do, you can do that there is hope. That's what we want you to understand today. The mindset shift is most of these diseases, the most common diseases that we're talking about today are diseases of lifestyle, and they are reversible, no matter what stage or what label you've been given. And you need to hear that you need to have hope. Because the minute you start thinking and accepting that that idea as truth is the moment that you can start to see things change, hope changes everything. But then if you add action to hope you've got a massive powerful recipe for change for success. Yeah for success. And so we talked about obesity and high blood pressure which goes along with vascular disease heart disease we've talked about your spine your your disk, right disk disease we've talked about brain diseases like strikes we've talked about Alzheimer's we've talked about get diseases cancers breast cancer, we've talked about I don't remember what else I think that kind of wraps up really are so asthma, people have asthma breathing disorders go away.

Jarrod:

They're really meant a lot to dairy

Anita:

and I didn't even mention Crohn's or colitis or anything like that, but that as well. And then autoimmune diseases I mentioned there are documentaries about women who've had MS and what else is going

Jarrod:

well, lupus but it's not just women, doctors, I mean medically trained physicians exactly have Dr. Stan sick, who was able to put ms can complete remission hasn't come back, and the doctor was looking at Code Blue Code Blue is her movie. It's a movie. Her website is Dr. Stan sick, so it's sta n cic.com and then Brooke Goldner, she has a goodbye lupus calm so she had lupus, diagnosed as a teenager went through many years of treatment, and then came upon lifestyle medicine and now she's completely lupus free.

Anita:

Exactly. And so it's out there this the information and the research. This is just testimonials we're talking about the information and research has been out for a long time. If you missed our episode that we just did one or two episodes back about the our top five plant based maybe Rex you've got to go see that and look at it unless I actually just listened to because

Jarrod:

we talk about watch the movies, listen to the podcast,

Anita:

there you go and grab your good point buy snacks, but we talked about those because it's a great place to get re inspired or to get that mindset shift that you need if you're just beginning this journey. So there's a ton I mean, we've left out some of their skin diseases, you know, skin diseases like they're things like eczema that people deal with on a regular basis that people see that disappear. psoriasis clears that up,

Jarrod:

which is autoimmune.

Anita:

I mean our daughter is a teen our sense of team. They do not have acne. People ask them all the time. What is your skin routine, especially my daughter? You know, she's 16 and her friends are asking her what's your skin routine? What are you doing and she's like, it's I don't put anything on my skin.

Jarrod:

It's what I know. thing, no products, no at all.

Anita:

It's what I put into my body. It's what you put into your body because your skin is breaking out. And it's telling you something's not right on the inside. And that's what all of these diseases are, they're all telling you warning, warning, there's something not right, I need something I'm not getting, and I'm getting too much of something I don't need. So here's the mindset shift. These diseases are diseases of lifestyle. And for the most part, most of the time, they can be reversed. Okay. I don't know your specific condition. I don't know what you're going through engineered. And I even touched on the fact here that it's not just the food, but for most people, I'd say 99.9% of time, food is one of the major contributing factors. That's why we're so passionate about it. And I love good food, and you've got to have good food, you're never gonna do it. I mean, you go look up these plant based recipes, and they taste like bark. And then you don't ever do this, again, you think this is nasty. Now look at it, it looks gross, it tastes gross, it smells gross, I don't want it. Well, we don't want that for you. Because there's a way to do it in a way that tastes great. And that you can do for life. And you can love it. We know it's possible, because we've done it, and we can show you how to do it too. We are thrilled that you've been with us today. Thank you so much for joining us. And we hope that you just get some hope from this episode, we want you to walk away if with nothing else, take away the big, big picture of if I've gotten this diagnosis, or I know I'm fighting obesity, I know I'm aching every single day or I know I just don't have the energy that I want to have to do all the things that I'd love to do. And you're being held back from all those possibilities that you see for your future. Know that there is hope, know that you can do something about it in a bunch of different areas, but specifically food. And so we want to show you how to do that. Go back soak up the podcast episodes, don't get overwhelmed one thing at a time, one step at a time, and your life can look completely different. Very soon. You know, we talked about a man who did this in two years, there are people that get reversal of things in a month, some of our reversals, and the aches and pains and things started going away within a couple of weeks. I mean, these changes can start to happen fast. Some of them take longer than others. And again, definitely be monitored by your physician, or your nurse practitioner or your physician assistant.
