Hey there, sunshine. Welcome to the Power on Plants podcast. We're your host, jared and Anita Roussel, and we're absolutely head over heels for whole plant foods and helping you navigate this incredible plant-based journey. That's because our lives have been completely changed by plant-based goodness. We used to struggle every day with excess pounds and low energy, vascular disease, joint pain and lack of sleep, just to name a few, and even though we're medical professionals, we still weren't getting practical answers that actually worked. So we dug into the research, we started living what we learned, and now we both have our lives back, and that's what we want for you, too. The truth is, you can do this, and it's not hard. You just need a way that will bring real and lasting change, and that path. It has to be simple and enjoyable, and it's got to be delicious too. So are you ready to live your life to the fullest? Then you're in the right place, because living without limits that's what Power on Plants is all about. So pull up your chair, grab a matcha latte and let's get started. Well, hello there, sunshine. We are thrilled to have you joining us today, because this is a very special episode.
Speaker 1:We get asked this question quite often what is power on plants? And I want to answer that question, because there are a lot of different people out there teaching whole food plant-based, but when you go to their websites and you see their material, you're going to see a lot of recipes and nothing else. So you're thinking how do I make this transition? Do I just start adding a bunch of new recipes? And there's so much more than that involved with adopting a whole food, plant-based lifestyle. That doesn't mean it has to be hard, but there are more steps to the system if you want to make it last for the long haul, and that's what we want for you.
Speaker 1:So Power on Plants is simple whole food, plant-based living for busy women who want to feel great and enjoy the journey right. We're busy women. A lot of the plant-based things that are out there aren't just for women exclusively, and what Jared and I noticed is that a lot of our clients, people that are coming to us, are women. They're making the meals for their husbands. They want to know how to make it work for them and for their family and for their children after them to leave a legacy, and that is what we're all about. But also, you're busy. You need to know how to do it in a way that's realistic with your lifestyle and it's got to be simple, right?
Speaker 1:So it's about simple, whole food, plant-based living for busy women who want to feel great. Because that's what we kept hearing all the time. People would come up to us and you know we'd have people say, like I remember this one person said to us I'm overweight, I want to lose weight, that's my main goal, but in reality I'm not focused on the weight, I just wish someone would show me how to feel better. I just want to feel good. And then we started noticing that everybody that was coming to us for help I just want to feel good. I just want to feel good.
Speaker 1:Like I get so overwhelmed because I see all these recipes. They're using ingredients either I'm not familiar with or it's recipes for things that are foreign to me, and I like all these foods that are comfort foods to me and nobody was showing them the system that makes this work. And Jared and I have worked for years in our own lives coming up with a system, and now we have many clients that have gone through our programs, our courses, our membership and have learned the game-changing strategies for making this lifestyle absolutely enjoyable so that it can work for long term, because if it's not quick and simple and enjoyable, you're not going to want to do it. Who would, who could blame me?
Speaker 2:Do you want results for just a week, a month or even a year? No, you want them for your whole lifetime. So that's the other thing. It has to work for the long haul, for the rest of your life, and you have to enjoy it or you will not do it. I promise you you will not do it beyond the time it takes to get to that result. And if you hate what got you there, it will not keep you going.
Speaker 1:It's going to take a lot more than just recipes. If your health struggles were going to be reversed with just recipes, think about it. Wouldn't you have already done it right? If just recipes were going to work, maybe you find a couple that you like, but I'll tell you what. I tried so many recipes on our plant-based journey that just left me wanting more. You know, I was used to a certain type of food and nobody was showing me how to get that. Thank God that I grew up in a family and I mean that literally. I really do thank him because I know he had a lot to do with us figuring this out, because I hit a time when I was 40 years old that I just wanted to feel good. Does that sound familiar? That was my story. So of course, people were coming to us wanting the same thing that I wanted when I was my sickest and we thought we were eating healthy, we were eating cage free, we were eating free range, we were eating organic, we were eating the hormone added.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and the healthy sandwich meat with no preservatives, no nitrates, no nitrites, no one telling us that sandwich meat was a group one carcinogen that was known to cause cancer. These are the kind of things we want you to understand. Right, that's just one little thing about sandwich meat, but you have to reframe these thoughts and figure out how to do this in a way that works for you, and you got to know why it's important and why do you need to leave these certain things behind. And how do you do it? I mean, when you're all you think about is salads right?
Speaker 1:A member of our membership said to me the other day, anita, before I met you all and before you started helping me on this journey and she's been with us inside the membership for a year now. She said, before I met you, every time I looked up or listened to something about plant-based, it seemed so overwhelming I didn't know what to do. I wanted to do it. I got the fact that the research is there and that whole plant foods are the answer to preventing and reversing the most common diseases of our time. She knew that, but she said I just didn't know how to make it work. For me, it always seems so overwhelming and so difficult because all I could think about was salads or just plain veggies that maybe were steamed or something. And while there's nothing wrong with those foods, if you're used to eating and enjoying taco and pizza and burgers and cheesy things like me, help me. I was the dairy queen. If those are the kind of things you like eating and desserts, you know how do you make it work? Well, you've got to learn how to have the same types of foods that you liked. You just learn to have them in a new way that you like the taste as much or better than your old favorites. Now, when you can do that, there's no deprivation, there's no cheat days, you don't need them. You just love the way you live, and that's why the system that Jared and I have developed at Power on Plants is so successful, why we have people reversing all these diseases, because they understand what step one is and step two is and step three is, and so on, and it's just so simple. But this member said to me Anita, listen, I never understood how simple it could be. So when I started listening to you, you gave actionable steps, simple things, and you said look, just do one thing. Do one thing, and what she got was momentum, momentum. So she wasn't just finding new recipes, she was implementing the things that were going over today in the success path with you, and through doing that she was able to reverse her reflux. She had been on reflux meds for years and she wanted to get off of those. Well, guess how many reflux meds she takes today? None, she doesn't need them. She no longer has reflux.
Speaker 1:She had headaches that were so severe she had just been to get a brain scan because she was concerned something very serious was going on. To get a brain scan because she was concerned something very serious was going on. The scans showed nothing and the headaches persisted. Now, how do you think that affected her life? Probably in a similar way that your health struggles are affecting your life, because I know I didn't have the exact same thing she had going on, but I can tell you it was crippling me from living the full life I wanted to live. But when you understand these simple steps and you know what to do next, then you have the formula that's going to help you build a life you love, so that you feel great, and that's what we all want. We just want to feel good. Right, and it works with your busy schedule. And so you can do it. Not only can you do it for life, you want to do it for life. That's the key, right there, don't you think? I mean really, you're so quiet over there.
Speaker 2:I'm just listening, I mean I'm just soaking it in. You're on a roll here. I think the critical difference here and you mentioned this earlier about you're getting instruction you just don't get that with recipes that you find off the internet and we don't hate on recipes.
Speaker 1:We like recipes.
Speaker 2:I'm all about the recipes, we love them, and we do provide some, but it's only part of the picture. It doesn't show you, like we say, how to love the lifestyle, how to take recipes that maybe you enjoy and to make those foods love you back, to know what to do, what to look for, If all you're given is a recipe that doesn't teach you about the principles and you have to understand those principles to really be successful with this.
Speaker 1:I cannot agree more, and so here are the steps. You're probably wondering what in the world are the steps?
Speaker 2:and like what do I need to know? Come on now. You've been talking about them for 10 minutes now. Give me this. I got to know what the steps are doing.
Speaker 1:All right. So step number one is mastering your mindset. Now we hear mindset and sometimes we just shut down.
Speaker 2:But I've got to tell you Please don't snooze out on us here. This is important.
Speaker 1:No, this is the first step, and it is about more than just mindset, like we hear about so often. This is busting myths, okay, because there are so many things that you've heard and come to believe that will shock you that just aren't true. They are not backed up by the research.
Speaker 1:Jared and I with him being a physician assistant and me being a nurse with my bachelor's degree on top of him going back for certification in lifestyle medicine and me being an integrated nutrition health coach we are passionate about the research. It's got to be backed up by research. We also had to see it work in our own lives, and not only that, we had to see it work in the lives of others, and we've seen it time and again. These steps work, they work, they work and we love the system. It's what we love to do because it's what brings results. The system it's what we love to do because it's what brings results. So when you're talking about your mindset, this isn't just thinking rightly. It's about first correcting the things that you have thought all the time, that were right but that were actually standing in your way, giving you a prime seat on the struggle bus.
Speaker 2:We want to get off the struggle bus. You caught me off guard on that one. I was thinking that these were things that were holding you back. They're roadblocks in your way, but yet you think they're true. So you continue doing them all the while. It really is sabotaging your effort all along.
Speaker 1:Yeah, absolutely so. This is like a friend of mine who's been we've been friends since high school and one day he said to me I'm having these symptoms with arthritis. It's horrible. I'm in so much pain, it's keeping me from living the life I want to live and I just don't know what to do.
Speaker 1:And so we start talking, come to find out he's believed that carbs are unhealthy. Carbs are unhealthy. This is a myth that you have to bust right off the top. Your body was made to run on carbs, so a carb is not a carb the carbs that are unhealthy. We'll talk about this more inside Accelerator, but I want you to understand there are healthy carbs and there are unhealthy carbs, and you've got to learn what the differences are so that you can get the ones out of your life that are sabotaging you, like Jared said, and get the ones into your life that you need, that are missing.
Speaker 1:And the point is, with his story, he had believed that carbs were unhealthy. He was intentionally avoiding certain food groups that would benefit him, that would make the inflammation go down, the very things he needed to eat, and that he loved eating berries okay, berries that he wouldn't eat them. And this took me back to a time when I was walking through a particular grocery store I won't say the name, but as a huge chain. Now, I didn't start it as a chain and it's a health food store. You probably know what I'm talking about and I'm walking down the aisle and one of the employees is deep in discussion with a man who's shopping there and the employee is telling him whatever you do, whatever you do, man, just don't eat bananas. Don't eat bananas, like bananas were behind the health issues that people are having today.
Speaker 1:Are you kidding me? You're kidding me. Okay, so we've got to reframe these ideas that we have around, things like that, like protein and just there's so many more. I don't want to take up a lot of your time. I want you to just understand what these steps are, because we go deep inside this inside accelerator. You've got to understand this first step. You've got to learn how to master your mindset and bust these myths that are holding you back so you can gain momentum and start moving forward. That is the first key. Even before you start changing the food set, you've got to understand step number one.
Speaker 2:I would say that's like opening the gate. So you're standing at a gate, you're trying to move forward. Those wrong mindsets are the gate closed in front of you, absolutely. Once you open it, then you can move forward. Those wrong mindsets are the gate closed in front of you, absolutely, once you open it, then you can move forward.
Speaker 1:I would say, then it's game on. That's what I'd say Game on, game on. All right. Step number two setting up your surroundings. This is step two of the success path and it's so very important. This involves your surroundings every day, not just physical, but let's think about your physical surroundings. I'm not going to go into everything again because I don't want to overwhelm you, but I want you to understand what these steps are about.
Speaker 2:Give you the idea.
Speaker 1:Right. So the physical surroundings would be your pantry, what's inside your cabinet, in your purse, in your desk at work, inside your refrigerator, your freezer. These are types of physical surroundings that can sabotage you if they're not set up the right way. And it doesn't have to be an overwhelming process. It's going to be change. You've got to learn how to focus on the right things on the nutrition label, because those also can be mindsets that are holding you back, and we'll deal with those in step one as well.
Speaker 1:But your surroundings are crucial, because if it's there, you're gonna eat it. If it's not there, you're not gonna eat it, and so you want to set yourself up in both ways for success, and you've got to know how to do that. But that's not all. Your surroundings are. Your surroundings are the locations that you go out to eat, the locations you pass every day. You walk by the vending machine. That's the surrounding. That's that path you normally take to work. There's a vending machine there. I'm just using this as an example. Think in your own life, like, what do I pass on a regular basis? I always drop by Starbucks on the way into work, so I stop and get that creamy, sweet treat that I love every day to pat myself on the back.
Speaker 2:I know he's going to say guilty, no, no.
Speaker 1:I was thinking you used to no, no, what were you thinking?
Speaker 2:I was thinking Dunkin' Donuts. I've never gotten the sweetie drinks.
Speaker 1:You did. That was me. Okay, that was me. I was more just a coffee guy. You drank straight up coffee.
Speaker 2:I did drink sugar in the coffee. Yeah, A little bit but it was coffee.
Speaker 1:You used to drink butter in the coffee. You know what? You used to drink butter in the coffee. I know Y'. Seriously that was whenever the plane took a nosedive into the ground, blowed up. It seriously caused vascular problems Like the bulletproof coffee with the coconut oil and the butter. Yeah, he started getting clogged arteries badly. Oh yeah, it was not good. No, it was not good.
Speaker 2:And that's the same thing we're talking about. I thought, hey, this is great, this is good for me, I'm cutting out sugar, I'm just doing this, and these are healthy fats. No, yeah, that was a bad mindset.
Speaker 1:Look, let me let me go right there.
Speaker 1:We're back on step one, but I've got to go right there because I want you to understand. You start hearing these things. You hear these things, these certain types of diets. When you're thinking about a diet to go on or a lifestyle, there's many things you want to think about, like is it quick, simple and delicious? But you've got to look deeper. What is the long term side effect of that way? Your vessels what's all that cholesterol do into your vessels? It's clogging them up, it's making them stiff, and that's not the only thing that's in there.
Speaker 2:And inflammation. I mean inflammation is going on throughout the body. What is that doing so?
Speaker 1:oh yeah, there's so much more, we're not going to dive into all that, but I just want you to understand. That can be also a mindset as well, but when we're talking about your surroundings, I was going to go like passing.
Speaker 2:Dunkin' Donuts or someplace like that, and you think oh an apple cruller.
Speaker 1:No listen if they've got a Krispy Kreme and that hot donut sign now is flashing, that's when it's going down. If you're a Southerner, you know what I'm talking about. You know what I'm talking about. Have you ever stood and watched them and just dreamt?
Speaker 2:of when they hit the box and you could take a dozen home and they might not even make it home. I'm just saying you know you got it bad when you see that sign flashing and you turn in real fast Like whoa, how did I even get here?
Speaker 1:Right. So that's a part of setting up your surroundings, right. Maybe you need to take a different path. So now we've got your surroundings at home, your surroundings in your personal spaces, but now we're talking about the path you take. So your physical surroundings, the path you take and who is surrounding you, in a different step. But this is just talking about setting yourself up with people around you who are on the same path, who are loving it, who give you ideas, encouragement, are excited about the journey, and you can share that together. There's a place you can go to come together in community with like-minded individuals. Because I'll tell you what you are going to skyrocket yourself forward when you do that, and that's in any area of life.
Speaker 1:So that's step number two setting up your surroundings. Step number three making it quick. Listen, sister, if it ain't quick and I can't get it on the table fast we've got four children. I homeschool them all. Jared homeschools them. He works full time as a physician assistant. We work full time on the business. If it's not quick, if it's not fast, it's not getting done. Like there's no way this lifestyle would work for us if it wasn't the easiest way we've ever lived. Now, when you first start. It may not feel like the easiest. Why not? Because it's new.
Speaker 1:And it's different, it's different, it's not what you're used to doing. But when you have someone to show you how you know one step to take and then the next step to take, it is simple, it is doable, and then it becomes a habit, and then that's just what you do. And then you add the next thing, and now it's just what you do. And then you add the next thing, and now it's just what you do, and before long it's just like your old way. It's just what you do and that's your new habit, and it's simple. But sometimes we think something is difficult, and really it's not difficult, it's just Well, it's like you're saying you have to reframe your thinking.
Speaker 1:Absolutely. You've got to reframe the thinking. So we want to think about making it quick and we have all kinds of things that we teach under this one step, but they're all very simple. And that leads me to step four making it simple. Because if it's not quick step three and it's not simple step four, it's also not going to work right. So you've got to have both of those things working together. It's got to be simple ingredients list. It's got simple methods You've heard me talk about before. If you've heard about our plant milk experiment when we first started doing this lifestyle. Like you think plant milk experiment when we first started doing this lifestyle, like you think plant milk is difficult, but if you do it the way that most people teach it, it is because you got to get the nut milk bags, drain the nut milk, then you got mess all over your kitchen is that what you mean by experiment?
Speaker 2:when we went through all the nut?
Speaker 1:milk bags. Yeah, I mean like nut milk disaster, but that's how most people do it Right, and so I've taken so many things. Because I grew up in my parents restaurant, I learned formulas from them. Yes, I eat differently than we used to eat, but I learned about cooking. I learned strategies. I learned how to make things quick and simple. You know, they own their own restaurant. They didn't hire anybody. They did all the work. I watched that growing up. So I watched them learn.
Speaker 2:Hey, if we can simplify that step let's simplify it, because it was the two of them and if it was just them running the entire thing, they had to make it faster.
Speaker 1:So do you think I make it a priority for you to make it simple and knowing what it's like living life today, because you want to build relationships. You've got to have time for those things, and you can do that, by the way, while you're cooking. That's something we also talk about. But relationships are so important. If you spend hours and hours and hours every day in the kitchen, like many times people do when they cook all of their meals, you're not going to have time to do the other things that you're called to do and that you want to do. So we've got to learn.
Speaker 1:Step four how to make it simple. And then step five, one of my personal favorites how to make it delicious. How do you make it taste great so you love it just as much as your old favorites? This is key. Okay, all of these things have to be there. It can't just be recipes. You've got to have it taste good, and we're all about that. I'm telling you. If you have been here long, you hear me talking about how picky I am. Even when I put a recipe out. I'm so picky. I mean, I'd like to know the average of times I cook and make and tweak a recipe before I actually release it, and so I have a lot of recipes.
Speaker 2:It's a lot.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's a lot, and they don't usually complain.
Speaker 2:I don't we get to be the taste testers. We are the beneficiaries of all the work she's doing for you.
Speaker 1:But the members don't complain because I'm usually working on about 10 at one time, so there's always something new coming out. Which, by the way, we release all of our exclusive recipes hot off the presses straight to our members, and many times I'll write recipes for our members. Carrie recently and Carrie, I know you're listening, girl, I love you. Listen, we have the best. I love our members so much. So Carrie wanted a cheese that she could put on her grilled cheese, something that was sliceable, that was gradeable, that she could put on pizzas and things like that. So I spent time in the kitchen developing a cheese just for her. All our members are benefiting. Because she asked the question like what cheese can I use? Do you have one? So I made one for her. I've made many gluten-free recipes for our gluten-free members. I mean, almost every recipe we have now is gluten-free.
Speaker 2:Most of them are.
Speaker 1:Because a lot of our members prefer to eat gluten-free, and so we have tons of those in there. But this is all about making it taste good, and so if there's something you need and you're inside accelerator, you better believe I'm going to help you find a recipe that's already there that you can do that, or I'm going to create one for you, or the members are going to step up and say hey this is what I use, and that happens many times.
Speaker 1:This is how I do it. This is what I put on this, or I put on that, or these are my quick and easy go to things. And then we have PDFs waiting for you on the inside of the membership as well that go through a lot of these different things. Like I came out with taco meat recently because I got to have taco meat. I love taco meat. It's this wonderful substitute that takes such a short time to get together, but then you can repurpose it and we talk about that too, like that's another simple thing. I didn't even talk about that, but repurposing things.
Speaker 2:There's a lot of stuff that we do that makes it simple. Oh yeah, Can't go over it all right now.
Speaker 1:No, we can't, but I'll skip the repurposing. But I'm telling you to do that as well. So, like with the taco meat, we've recently released a PDF that shows you how do you use the taco meat. Now I've got the taco meat. She's shown me how to use it because I go in the kitchen and I cook many of the recipes. I'm actually doing that through the members exclusive cookbook right now. I'm cooking through them and so they get these in the kitchen recipe demos where I demo how to make it and talk you through it as you go, and we're linking it to the cookbook, to the digital cookbook, so they can click and it just links them right to the video, and I will say, on some of the different recipes that you develop, there are also certain techniques that you're teaching in the videos that could then be applied to other recipes.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's huge, that's huge. It's one of the big game changers.
Speaker 2:I feel like Well, I was sitting here thinking delicious Okay, obviously it's important, but if you have quick and simple without delicious, you have an incomplete equation. I'll give you an example Sawdust. Sawdust is quick and simple, especially if you've got somebody around that is a carpenter like your dad used to be a carpenter but it is not delicious. You are not going to eat that. So it is a very critical part of the equation.
Speaker 1:I love that, but I'll even take that into the food, because think about how many times, sister, you have tried a recipe and it was quick, it was simple, but it was not delicious, right? I've had so many run-ins with that. Or maybe it was delicious, but it took you two hours to make it and by the time you got to eating it, everybody else enjoyed it, and you're just kind of hangry.
Speaker 2:Well, everybody else was gone and the food's cold. And you think, well, I got a mess to clean up now. That's not enjoyable.
Speaker 1:Never mind. You had a snack the whole time you were cooking because you were so hungry, because it took so long. Then you're not even hungry when it's done and it doesn't taste good to you, even if it was delicious. These are the real life things that just blow my mind. It's like recipes are not going to teach me how to do these things, but it doesn't have to be hard. We've made a system and as we go we'll be teaching more.
Speaker 1:The research shows that the key piece is getting the food right. So if you're a busy woman and you just want to feel good, you're so very tired of your health struggles holding you back and you're ready to get off the struggle bus. You're just tired of doing things the same way over and over again, from diet to diet to diet. You know that whole plant foods are shown to help prevent and even reverse this is the most important thing Reverse the most common diseases of our time. We see it over and over again. Jared and I have experienced it. Go back and listen to my story. In episode number one, we talk about both of our struggles before we started eating this way. If you're in the place where you understand that whole plant foods are the answer. You've got that. You've seen the research. You've listened to Dr Greger. You know that. You know that this is the key. But you just can't wrap your mind around how in the world you could ever do it when it's just salads or it's just plain old vegetables. Listen, this is your time. But, anita, it all seems so overwhelming. There's so much conflicting information out there. You're stuck, I get it. You feel stuck because there's too much. There's a lot of stuff out there that is just not true. It's not based on research and you don't know what to do. You need a system that's been proven time and again to work to not only prevent but even reverse these diseases, and we know that whole plant foods do those. But you've got to know the steps to take so that it will work for you. As a busy woman, you have a life right, so the food has got to be simple to prepare, it's got to be quick to make and it's got to taste good. You want to enjoy the journey? I get it. And listen, I'm all about enjoying the journey. That is why we have created this, because we have a heart for you.
Speaker 1:Jared and I went into health care to not do sick care. I'm just saying, and what is happening in general in mainstream medicine is not health care, it is sick care. We're not against medications If you've been around here anytime, you understand that but there is a time and a place for medicines. And not only have we been able to reverse things, naturally, so many things. Our clients keep having success. We have podcast listeners writing and going I've reversed my cholesterol, my blood pressure's back to normal.
Speaker 1:All these success stories rolling in and it makes our hearts soar because we genuinely care for you. This is why we show up for you week after week. We want you to have success. We want you to beat the overwhelm. You should not feel overwhelmed. When you have a system and you know what steps to take and you're learning the different things under each step of the way and you know what to do, much of that overwhelm just disappears. It's no longer there.
Speaker 1:You've got step number one, the mindset. Right now, you don't listen to the mess, you think that's just hogwash and you just keep on moving to step two. And step two is setting yourself up for success your surroundings, the people, places and things that are around you on a regular basis. Then you can move into step three how do I make it quick? Step four how do I make it simple so that it works with my busy lifestyle? And step five for the love, how do I make it taste good?
Speaker 1:I'll tell you, this is a lifetime process, jared and I have got these steps down, but I'll tell you, we keep learning and growing. I don't ever want to stop learning and growing in any area of my life, and neither should you. There's always something we want to tweak and change, but you keep going back to these steps and going deeper in them. You don't have to know everything about every step your first time through. That is not your goal. And let me tell you something else Do not worry about doing it perfectly, because many times it's through the mistakes that you make that you learn and you grow, and you keep moving forward Like OK. So, for example, jared and I didn't understand that at our favorite restaurant, they were slathering our, our vegan potato and pork fat. Ok, for for years we went to this restaurant thinking we were just getting a potato.
Speaker 2:I don't think they ever claimed it was vegan. But we asked it was a veggie plate, it's just potatoes. Yeah, it's just potatoes. Yeah, it's just potatoes.
Speaker 1:And then, all of a sudden, this woman tells us one of the waitresses oh no, that's got pork lard all over it. Are you kidding?
Speaker 2:me You're recycling their bacon grease.
Speaker 1:Right, like, really Because we specifically asked for no bacon, right, and you're just going to learn as you go and listen. We've experienced so many of those. We can keep you from a lot of those pitfalls as well. Sunshine, we would love to welcome you inside Accelerator, but it's only open a couple of times a year because we close the door to work closely with our members on the inside.
